DIARRHOEA IN CHILDREN

DIARRHOEA:
It is defined either as a frequent, watery or
loose stool when compared to the normal amount. Diarrhoea is a very common
problem in babies and children. It can be dangerous if not carefully managed
because in diarrhoea amount of water and salt gets decreased in the child’s
body. If it is not treated carefully and quickly or your child becomes
dehydrated then your child needs to be hospitalized.
MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS
OF DIARRHOEA:

KEY MEASURES TO
PREVENT DIARRHOEA:
•
Wash your kid’s hands well and often.
•
Access to safe drinking water.
•
Wash fruits and vegetables from clean water before use.
•
Avoid washing pets and their cages.
•
Keep the pet feeding area separated from your eating area.
•
Keep your bathroom and washroom clean and dry.
DO'S AND DON'T’S
IN CHILD WITH DIARRHOEA:
DO'S:
•
Keep your child hydrated.
• If
your child does breastfeeding then continue feeding when they require if they
are not vomiting.
•
Report if your child has blood in stools.
•
Make sure they are drinking oral dehydration solution and homemade
fluids like dal soup, rice water, coconut water, lassi, etc.
•
Report if your child has a high fever.
•
Keep your kitchen platform clean.
•
Once the diarrhoea stops, gradually return to a normal diet.
DON'T’S:
•
Give plain water to your baby.
•
Give juices, soda water, fast foods, dairy products, Caffeine.
• Use
any herbal medicine to stop stools.
•
Give your child any anti-diarrhoea medication unless your pediatrician
advises it.
CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR, IF YOUR CHILD:
• is
3 months old and has diarrhoea.
•
don’t seem to be getting better.
•
diarrhoea lasts for more than 3 days.
• has
severe pain in the stomach.
• has
repeated vomiting for longer than 4 to 6 hours.
• has
dry and sticky mouth.
• has
dizziness.
•
stools containing blood or pus.
• has
a fever of 102°C or higher.
*Diarrhoea
